As Laurent Gbagbo sat in a downtown Abidjan Hotel room in his vest he cut a very sorry figure. The same can be said of many of the Presidents, Prime Ministers and Kings who over the years have found themselves abandoned by the very people that supported them.

Just like Hosni Mubarak, Ben Ali and Saddam Hussain, Gbagbo found himself fed to the lions by his colonial masters, who once kept him in power. This left his main rival Ouattara to have him dragged and humiliated before the cameras.

The fate of Gbagbo should send a message to all those who make their bed with Western powers, that they will not be your friends forever.  Just like when Saddam was pulled out a hole in the ground, no body in the West who had supported him for decades shed a tear that day.

The chaotic political standoff that has gripped the Ivory Coast for the last few weeks has clearly highlighted how Western interference creates havoc. It also shows what a fallacy democracy is, since when has the result of an election been implemented via the barrel of a gun?
